Well, it took 20 years, but the 2002s are now coming around and showing even better than their potential appeared early on. Grands-Echézeaux from Drouhin is not an easy bottle to find, but I was lucky in this vintage. Very complex nose with floral aromas. Mouth is black and red fruits with the black licorice typical of GE, and a medium-full body. Still some tannin left, and so as spectacular as this wine is today, there is still upside potential. Cellared since original release.

2001 vs 2002 DRC tasting with a few others; 10/20/2018-10/21/2018 (Marcel's by Robert Wiedmaier, DC and Bryan's house): Big scale expressive nose displaying very ripe, perhaps slightly overripe, black fruit, blackberry, blackberry jam, caramel, sweet spices and earth. Excellent concentration, packed concentrated ripe black fruit, dense, rich and oily, good acidity and mineral, and a medium to long concentrated ripe black fruit driven finish. The biggest and the richest wine of the night along with the Camille Giroud RSV but not as precise, pure and detailed as the DRC GEs. This is a very impressive and imposing youthful bottle that needs another two decades of cellaring.
