Well, it took 20 years, but the 2002s are now coming around and showing even better than their potential appeared early on. Grands-Echézeaux from Drouhin is not an easy bottle to find, but I was lucky in this vintage. Very complex nose with floral aromas. Mouth is black and red fruits with the black licorice typical of GE, and a medium-full body. Still some tannin left, and so as spectacular as this wine is today, there is still upside potential. Cellared since original release.

2001 vs 2002 DRC tasting with a few others; 10/20/2018-10/21/2018 (Marcel's by Robert Wiedmaier, DC and Bryan's house): Big scale expressive nose displaying very ripe, perhaps slightly overripe, black fruit, blackberry, blackberry jam, caramel, sweet spices and earth. Excellent concentration, packed concentrated ripe black fruit, dense, rich and oily, good acidity and mineral, and a medium to long concentrated ripe black fruit driven finish. The biggest and the richest wine of the night along with the Camille Giroud RSV but not as precise, pure and detailed as the DRC GEs. This is a very impressive and imposing youthful bottle that needs another two decades of cellaring.

Served double blind. Amazing freshness, seductive red fruited nose of autumn leaf, little spice and earth. Lovely delineation, lush fruits accompany by bright acidity, very powerful but still showing the finesse and class. Persistent.

Bt breathed 1 hr, med bright garnet. Red cherries, hawthorn and some steminess aroma. Quite oaky on palate with good extraction, tannin slightly dusty disturbing a delicate balance of acidity against faint sweet fruits. At this price level, one would expect either more power or finesse.

After one hour of air this was hitting on all cylinders. This nose is so wonderful with some aeration. Great power. Detail. Still young but this was oh so good.

The Verticals Tasting at La Paulée 2015 (Colicchio & Sons, New York): Elegant, seductive red fruit with sap and a perfect infusion of wet earth throughout. At a peak now. One of the best wines of the afternoon and a great example of Drouhin at its gentle, elegant best. Pure fruit, no interference by wood or any other winemaking artifice.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. Lean red fruit on nose with floral background. Palate far less accessible and strongly shut down, dominated more by acidity than fruit. Good spice and red fruit re-emerge on finish. Good potential, most likely from 2018 or so.

Nose: strawberry and raspberry. Midpalate:beautiful ripe cherry and pronounced tannin. Finish:darker fruit, eucalyptus, plenty of tannin for structure. One of the best burgundies I've ever had and only beginning to show it's own. Definitely has 10+ years to go.

Medium purple garnet color with a watery edge. A little restrained on the nose, but expressive on the palate. The aromatics opened up over 2 hours. The wine was dominated by spicy incense. There was good fruit as well, red raspberry and ripe bing cherry and a chalky minerality. Balanced, tannins were plush but with a good grip. The wine had a beautiful elegance but was a little monolithic. The spiced incense dominated, but there was enough going on to make for a very good wine.
