Not easily found on many wine lists in the New World, this Provençal Grenache- led wine joins the ranks of the finer ex-Bordeaux and Rhone producers offering sophisticated blends where alcohol and brambles used to lead. Raffault, Barral, and others are taking care with old vines and biodynamic growth to coax new dimensions from these grapes. A velvety -- albeit rough cut-- dark black cherry, pine, bark, wet dark soil and a hint of Grenache sweetness come into play after 20 minutes in the decanter. Not a Rayas to be sure, nor will it develop the complexity of an Hermitage, but very enjoyable with hearty food or cheese.

Even though I don't get the "it's a cross among a Bandol and a CdP and a Bordeaux" stuff, it's a very good wine and it pays off if you stick your nose in the glass for a while and try to suss out how the cabernet sauvignon, syrah and grenache play out. It's delicious and the stinging tannins are a delight. Here's my crazy observation: the nose reminds me of 2010 St Emillions. The taste doesn't even slightly line up with that, which makes it intriguing. It's not cheap, but it's an intriguing wine, definitely worthwhile if you and a few friends want to debate what's going on in the glass. DAY TWO: Still a bottle of Yes.

Absolutely needs the decanter. But 20 min in...easy, deep. Graphite on the nose and even palate. Dark. Brooding. But good.
