1997 Marimar Torres Pinot Noir at $33.99. This was a bigger, bolder wine than the Byron, which was lighter and more elegant. The Torres had many layers of fruit that tended to be darker and more jammy in taste than the Byron. The Torres had lots of structure. Its finish was tart, making it go well with a veal chop, pork or salmon. It ranked third in our tasting.

Garnet red color, with clear edges. Herbal and earthy nose, with coffee bean and cranberry notes. I was surprised by the vibrancy of this aged pinot noir on the palate. Sleek rhubarb and black cherry flavors, with a touch of sage. Very alive, with a surge of sticky fruit and acidity on the finish. Paired well with Beef Bourguignon.

Deep ruby with red rim. Moderately intense nose of smoke, blackberries and black cherry. Full body, with same flavors on palate as on nose. Quite tannic. Medium, astringent finish. Needs time.

Roy Hersh's tasting of CA/OR Pinot: Charcoal and cherry on the nose. Charcoal on the palate. Drying and tight on the finish. No fruit to be found.

Looked full-bodied on the pour, but weak attack; liked better with dinner at Iron Gate the second time
