  • Spur of the moment to open this, and it was quite the moment. At first there was this immediate hit of black cherry, with a a dusty, herbal coating like a haze surrounding the fruit. Thirty minutes later things integrated, as if it had been allowed to simmer over a low flame until all the ingredients had mellowed and integrated to form a finished dish. It’s low on structure, so this is a good time to drink it. It’s high on flavor, so it won’t disappoint. Have a simple meal, or just some charcuterie, and drink it all in.

  • Burgundy style bottle, have a couple of 2000 as well, which are in the classic Rioja/Bordeaux style bottle.

Nice adobe color, which shows the age. Dark cherries and smoked ham on the nose. A little closed in the beginning, but opened up nicely after about 1 hour. Old style Rioja, meaty and still fruity and refreshing acidity. Nice long finish which calls for more. Considering 99 wasn't a great year in the Rioja, this is a great wine. Great value and should develop even more in the bottle. Hopefully I find a 2001 Reserva of this one.
