Lovely clear red/brown colour, but would never guess its age from the colour. Mature nose, forest floor, but not mouldy mulch, more dried leaves. Palate is clean, more dry, clean secondary notes. This really is lovey and so integrated.

Drunk over three nights, and got better and better. Monte Real Reserva and Gran Reserva are such timeless and reliable wines. At 45 years very much alive and on a gentle plateau of maturity. Lovely.

Still in good shape. Classic nose of sweet dark plum and cedar. Not particularly complex but appealing. Velvety and easy on the palate with light sweet fruit and good acid balance. The tannins are now barely present and the oak is fully integrated. Not the most complex old rioja, but very enjoyable and was happily drunk quite quickly!

Truffle Dinner at the Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): We really worried if this wine would have survived the journey of 41 years. The cork crumbled but the wine was singing, singing like a proper old school Rioja. Fine wine, elegant and full of character. The colour shows the age of course. Still full of life, well matured, still good amount of fruit, nice acidity, earth and with just a touch of oxidation on the finish. A joy of a wine! 93+

Obviously very aged and showing plenty of oxidation but lasted pretty well through Christmas lunch with some softening and very little fade
