  • At 20 years of age, this was a pleasant surprise, a very sound bottle of wine. Full bore Cabernet that just needed a lot of time for the tannins and heat to subside. Well, they are gone now and have left behind a quite lovely Chilean Cabernet layered with nice fruit and good balance. I'll admit, I had one of these about 3 years ago, and it was oxidized, and another about 6 years ago that was very tannic and rather disappointing. Earlier bottles were indeed dominated by uncompromisingly strong tannins, but Neal Martin really misjudged this wine when he gave it an 86 and said to "drink now." The years of age did wonders and I know he would judge this wine very differently now. The degree of improvement in just the last several years is amazing.

  • Tasted after 2006. Evolved in colour and on the nose, very elegant, slightly spicy, dark berry fruit, tobacco, eucalyptus, cedar. Lots of acidity on the palate, well balanced, generous fruit, open, layered, very long. My favourite in this vertical, the group preferred the 1999. 92-94

  • This was a 16 year old wonderful surprise. In 2012 Neal Martin gave it an 86 and said the tannins were harsh. Neal, you should have waited another 4 years! The wine was fresh, tannins had subsided to the point of just giving the wine character and body, nothing at all hard, austere, and uncompromising. Ok, I'll admit the bottle I had about 10 years ago could be described as harsh, austere and uncompromising. It just needed 10 more years to turn into a real beauty. Nice fruit, excellent balance, and intense enough to pair well with spaghetti and spicy Italian sausage. It would have given last night's Araujo a run for its money.

  • Really great wine. Had at a wine tasting of 8 of us drinking 6 bottles and this came in #1 overall. Very complex, smooth, buttery, vanilla, lots of ripe berries. Just a really great bottle overall. Worth $45-50??? Up to the person. A great bottle for a special occasion.
