Community Tasting Notes (8) Avg Score: 93.6 points

  • This wine held a beautiful balance of fruit, earth, spice and mineral notes. Medium density wine that remained integrated throughout the 3 hours of consumption (one hour decant). This wine is in a nice drinking window and likely has another decade of good drinking. Cheers!

  • 24 Napa Reds: All tasted double blind. Brief impressions. The tasting was a competition of two groups about bringing “Napa wines which are in a very good drinking spot right now” with us blind tasters as jury. As there were a lot of wines, prolonged decanting was not an option. I was really surprised that somebody would bring a 2013 to such a tasting as I hardly ever had a 2013 which is remotely open and ready (confirmed with 4 out of the 24 wines being from 2013 and none of them being really ready). This Jumping Goat was one of the more expressive 2013s which showed dark fruit, minerality and some earthy tone on the nose and palate. Very good freshness but also here still some slightly edgy tannins and overall still muted. The potential is there but this needs more time. If you open a bottle today, give it at least 5 hours in the decanter.

  • Napa battle (Napa Grill, Zurich): Tasted blind, double-decanted. Layered nose with some leathery notes, but also a bit of heat. Rather dark and rather ripe berry fruit. Intense and concentrated palate, but not well integrated. Going back to a Melka vertical I had 1.5 years ago I found myself similarly unimpressed back then. 2005 was outstanding, but 2008, 2009, 2014 and 2015 also very good – so a lot of options there to avoid the 2013.

  • Melka Estates Tasting (Napa Grill, Zurich): Big Melka Estates tasting with various wines produced by Philippe and Cherie Melka, both present at the event, including the largest Jumping Goat vertical to date. Selected notes of the winemaker comments included in the tasting story. All wines we tasted showed a European inspired handwriting (Graves, Rhone valley) especially for older vintages with later vintages (2012- 2014) coming across quite heavy on the extraction. But with most scores in the 91-94 range (few exceptions included Jumping Goat 2005 and Martinez 2015, the first vintage for the latter), the line-up struggled to meet my high expectations.

    Tasting note:
Ripe, dark and highly extracted fruit. Some hints of sweet oak but almost drowning in the (over-)ripe fruit.

  • During a vertical tasting, flight one 07-09. well managed Napa CabSav. Richer than the Mekerea but still good balance. Notes of dark fruit, spices. The 05 and 11 had the edge with their composed balance. The 07 was dead with alcoholic, oxidative notes.
