Can't rate this wine but was definitely interesting. I expected it to have really turned for the worse, but it still had some life even though it was clearly an aged wine -- couldn't put my finger on what was making this tick for better or worse. Wish I had tasted it blind.
Eggplant parmigiana was the foil for this bottle. Crimson with slight bricking on the edges, this wine revealed a slight barnyard note on open which quickly gave way to copious levels of smoky toast, candied cherry, sweet menthol and leather. Slow and round attack yields to a mouthful of red stone fruit and savories on the mid-palate and finish. There is some tannin left to push the finish through the vapor trail of flavor. A well done effort by Rochioli! This can continue to evolve for another 5 years, plenty of fruit and tannin to ride it out. At 14.2%, this was ahead of it's time in pushing the ripeness level that has become the norm in Cali Pinot.
Lush red fruit aromas with clove and other baking spice. Ripe strawberry and red cherry on palate, perhaps slightly simple flavors, but fun, opulent and easy to enjoy. Note, the cork was in poor condition for a wine this age, showing signs of leakage along the edge.
