Already fading at the rim and showing a bit brownish notes. Dried fruit, particularly plums, on the nose. This is veering in the Brunello direction of Chianti. Full, deep, smooth and powerful.

Quite dense and somewhat developed dark red color with the hue of dried blood. The nose is complex and somewhat mature with nuanced aromas of ripe dark fruits, some sour cherries, a little bit of leather and a hint of tobacco. The wine feels quite rich, ripe and somewhat sweet-toned with full body and complex, nicely developed flavors of slightly wizened plums and dark cherries, some raisiny fruit, a little bit of leathery character and a hint of of liquorice. The alcohol lends a rather hot, fiery touch to the palate. Overall the wine comes across as rather structured with the moderately high acidity and firm, grippy tannins. The finish is quite tannic and rather warm with nuanced, developed flavors of dried dark fruits, alcohol, some old leather, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, a hint of earthiness and a touch of savory wood.
A stern and structured Chianti Classico Riserva that is showing already some developed characteristics. Overall the wine feels nicely balanced and quite muscular, but the alcohol sticks out a little, adding a slight blemish to the otherwise great wine. Although the wine is showing some developed characteristics, I guess the wine still is still some distance away from its apogee, so some cellaring couldn't hurt. However, I must say that stylistically I might prefer the regular Villa Cafaggio over this Riserva one - at least when it is this hot. Perhaps a bit pricey at 29,93€, but not forbiddingly so.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #113; Italy: Chianti Classico Riserva (By BS): Beautiful bouquet with dark forest fruits. On the palate dark and red forest fruits as well as cherries, a lot of licorice, beautiful oak, good acidity and firm but round tannin. Good wine!
