  • Did not like this as much with age on it--which surprised me. There was a lot of alcohol and canned cherry pie filling in the aromas--at 15.1 alc/vol this is not a small wine, after all. Flavors were smooth and simple cherry. Fine with roast chicken, but I thought it had more interesting complexity when younger.

  • Nice nose of baked cherry pie with similar flavors but added pomegranate and spice. A medium wieght and pretty wine. Very well balanced, not alcoholic or acidic but smooth and polished in the finish. Will frink fine and imporve though 2008. Drinks fine on it's own after an hour open.

  • Nice blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mouverdre. It is ready now. I don't think that I would age this one too long. Nice wine with food, but would not recommend it as a stand alone wine.

  • Nothing too incredible here. A solid grenache/syrah blend. Deep purple in the glass.
Nose of candied cherries, and rich all spice.
Medium body with a realtively round finish.

  • The 2004 Espérance is comprised of 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre. Looking for a rustic wine to pair with tonight's dinner of Steak Adobe, I chose this. Opened and poured with about 30 minutes of air in the bottle. The nose is dominated by sweet strawberry jam, with some cherry, new leather, and spice in the background. Black cherries, earth, and spice dance gently upon the palate in a very pleasing and feminine way, but the flavors begin to drift in the finish, leaving only the memory of earth and spice. Initially, I was a bit disappointed, because the wine came across as a bit too polished and innocuous for what I was looking for. But interestingly, with the spiciness of the Steak Adobo, the wine became more rustic and muscular, which was initially my reason for choosing it in the first place. So while on its own, the wine seemed to lack that rustic quality, the food seemed to make the wine less polished and more substantial -- a good thing in my book. Without food, I would give this wine 88-89 points. However, with food it easily scored 91-92 points. In the end, I decided to take the middle ground and give it 90 points.
