  • Dark and clear. ripe rich fruity and yes, modern but recognisably Rioja. I feel like this had little finesse or evolution and could go on to make older bones. It stood up well on day 2 but the final glass on D3 was soupy and imprecise. Having established that I like my Rioja classic and attenuated by age, I have to say this was good in a Baron De Ley Reserva 2010 or CUNE reserva 2012 kind of way. Both wines far cheaper than this. Have I done it a disservice drinking too soon?

  • Drink now.

First impressions are positive... with Pinot-esq flavour but with thicker tannin and an alcohol burn. But as the bottle went on the fruit turns dull plum (it will turn prune with a few more years) and the alcohol burn dominates. Without food the finish hurts (alcohol, acid and tannin). The tannins are silly, super extracted.

I could not drink half a bottle. Very good example of how wines can be made to impress on first taste.

Drink now, this will not get better. Best consumed in a busy setting (e.g. cafe) where you will give the first taste much more attention than others. Expensive cafe wine though!

    14% ABV (tastes higher).

  • Unusual for the lovely, floral and berry fragrance. The finish is creamy and fragrant, too. This is Rioja for Burgundy lovers!

  • Asador Etxebarri
Plaza de San Juan 1, 48291 Axpe Achondo, Vizcaya, Spain

    Decanted one hour.
    Deep impenetrable purple black.
Heady nose of black currant, spicy oak, blood plum, lifting this glass is a pleasure to appreciate the fragrant aromatics.
Muchos grande fruit on the palate.
Harmonious in the glass after the time in the decanter.
Medium/ full palate, dark berries, blackberry, dark plum, mocha, expresso, long finish with 3 hours in the decanter a great pairing for our second wine, following the 2010 Silex Didier Dagueneau Pouilly-Fume.

More time in the cellar will reward.
