  • Big ripe blackberry flavour with chocolate behind it and some eucalyptus. The drawcard here though is the texture as it's super plush in the mouth. I think there would have to be full MLF here as well as a lot of lees work to give the wine this big, velvety mouthfeel but the final product is impressive.
I drank this by itself and I think you need to have it with meat or cheese to provide you with more palate variety as this wine itself doesn't have the complexity to stay interesting for a full bottle.
Interesting to consider that over the years this wine has won four Jimmys...was it a better wine back then? It's definitely a victime of changing fashions but even so this just seems good but not great, a nice wine but it doesn't justifies its RRP pricetag.

  • Previous bottles seemed a touch hot and aggressive so I gave this a 5hr decant to see how it changed and the wine was definitely better. I think it has more cellaring potential than I previously gave it credit for.

  • Dark, ripe fruit. Some cooling herbal notes. Velvet soft tannins, very plush in the mouth. As per previous note; surprisingly soft for only 8yrs old under screwcap, seems to be an early maturing vintage.

Fruit characters are a bit indistinct. It's a really enjoyable wine to drink but I'm struggling to identify specifically what I'm tasting.

  • Ripe blackcurrant fruit, slight menthol note and a dark aniseed character. Strong tannins should keep this alive for a long time but it is drinking well now.

If I have a concern it's that it's almost drinking too well now whereas my memory of some past vintages was that they looked vibrantly young past 10yrs, so '13 might be an early maturing vintage.
Certainly no rush, but I'd plan to drink this in the next 5-8yrs and beyond 10 I'd worry the fruit may have faded.

  • Nice, balanced, but too expensive for what it delivers.
