Drunk alongside a non VV Pira 2014, which was very nice, but the Pira VV really was a step up. Very clean, linear, balanced wine with good length. A real pleasure to drink which i can’t say about a number of Barolos. Has many years to go but drinking beautifully with a decant

Dekantert. Første inntrykk: burgund. Perfekt nebbiolo-nese, mørk. Vidunderlig munn, mørk, igjen. Tjære, bær. Balansen mellom frukt, syre og tanniner meget pen. Tydeligere syre, mindre tydelig frukt dag 2. Ikke så bra.

Tasted blind over dinner at Al Forno. Aired in bottle 2 hours before and then poured into decanter over the dinner. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Some sediments at bottom of decanter. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of dusty blue earth, stony minerality, red licorice, sour red cherries. Initially quite tight, but then after 1+ hour in decanter - this was showing off rose petals and tar. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), structured but fine high tannins, deceptively full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, sweet riper red cherries, stony minerality, dusty earth, leather, tomato juice, spices ?oregano and thyme. Long tarry finish. Very good quality. Very complex, though it needed air time to show this. Very traditional feels. I was initially thinking an austere young Biondi Santi Brunello, then as the roses and tar emerged - Barolo/Barbaresco was the guess. I was guessing Bruno Giacosa about 10 years' old. Real good stuff! Looking forward to trying more Roagna. I will be keeping my bottle of this for another 5 more years. Vecchie Vite is a selection from the oldest vines. From the Pira cru in the commune of Castiglione Falletto. The plot was previously known as "La Rocche e La Pira".
