  • Italian theme dinner at Highland. Tasted blind. Drank in Grassl 1855.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of aged leather, light mushroom earth, balsamic, dried flower petals, dust, black plums, sweet spices. Developed.
On the palate, dry, good very high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.5%), lovely fine integrated tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of orange peel, balsamic, black plums, aged leather, sweet tea leaves, dusty dirt earth. Long savoury finish.
Very good quality. Shocked when this was revealed. Didn't give me any overtly modern vibes. Bravo Domenico Clerico. Only gripe is perhaps this feels a little older than expected. Good to drink up already.

Bois de rose qui lie le tout.
    hebabacé/fleural sur le thym
    vraiment bon

  • The 2011 Barolo Pajana from Domenico Clerico is a wine of immense structure and power that will need time for the hard edges to round out. The bouquet comprises ripe dark fruits, orange peel and a touch of earth. Hefty tannins are conspicuous on the palate, and there is strong mid-palate depth and a lasting finish. Hold.

Full Pull Trophy Barolo Price Drops, 11/14/2018

(Domenico Clerico Barolo Pajana) Hello friends. Domenico Clerico is one of the famous names in Barolo. Heralded among the revitalizers of the region, he was named a “Barolo Boy” along with Paolo Scavino, Luciano Sandrone, and Roberto Voerzio. This cohort is famous for shepherding in an experimental new wave for Barolo in the second half of the 20th century. Domenico began making wine in 1979. His family had been growing grapes for years, but he was the first to make wine from the estate. He continued to farm his family’s land as a viticoltore—or vine grower—and expand their holdings in some of the greatest crus of Barolo. The winery is most famous for its terroir-specific, single-vineyard bottlings from these crus. Today we have excellent pricing on two of these famed bottlings, both from 2011. This access is notable for many reasons, but especially since Domenico’s passing last year after a long battle with cancer. 2011 is among the last vintages this phenom worked on.We have access to this special pricing because we purchased every last bottle left in the Seattle market. Full Pull list members are now the only ones with access to these two wines, which both started their lives at $90. The lowest price we can find for this bottle nationally is 79.93. This particular wine comes from Pajana vineyard, known for its firm structure, aging potential, and concentrated depth of flavor. Barolo is always 100% Nebbiolo, and this one comes from grapes grows on southwest-facing calcareous clay and sandy soils, about 350 meters above sea level. It was aged in French oak Barriques for 32 months prior to bottling, and has now spent over four years in bottle. James Suckling: Copyrighted material withheld.
