Henri Jayer Dinner (Ming San's): There were some absolutely brilliant wines on the night, especially the pair of 1985 1er Crus, but this one - from a significantly weaker vintage, but drinking at a wonderfully matured peak - wowed all of us. It was almost unanimously voted wine of the night if I recall. What a wonderful nose it had, with beautifully integrated tones of toast and spice, dark fruit and tea leaves. It was on the palate where it stole my heart though. This was a wine of perfect poise - gentle and mature, it was a study in balance and integration, with all its parts completely resolved into a perfect whole, so that the wine seemed to float through the mouth in a beguilingly ethereal glow of sweet cherries and sour plums - all intensity without weight, energy without force. Less complex maybe than one would expect after the nose, but boy was it wonderful to drink. Just a silky, transparent ride of pure Burgundy magic. Bravo - this was to me everything a mature Burgundy should be.

Echezeaux Extravaganza: Henri Jayer and DRC 1976-2007 (La Grenouille, New York): Dark and brooding. Plums. Still very alive and structured.
