A disappointing wine, showing the worst aspects of the old, sometimes too acidic, ”light touch” original de montille style— which, when it worked/works- could/can produce ethereal, lilting bottles, especially in fruit-happy vintages and in de montille’ various volnays. But....this Pommard Rugiens; a great climat and from the wonderful 1985 vintage— is thin, mean and dying. A perfectly stored bottle in a cold European cellar- so i fear it is the wine itself that is poor I doubt it was ever good— too much acidity, too little fruit. So... as we all know in burg world and with old bottles... you win some, you lose some. Luckily, with top producers, good years and sound storage, you usually win far more often than you lose.

From magnum. Perfectly resolved, perfect balance. Indeed, pretty much perfect pommard! Black, glossy, but pure, precise fruits. Gorgeous wine. Put the rest of the flight to shame.

as expected, a big wine firm tannins and needing time to unwind. Lovely earth and sous bois with miles to go before it sleeps and miles to go...
