Nose of black cherry, black berry, boysenberry, and forest floor, opened in honor of the Summer ZAP Event this Sunday, same on the palate, plum color in the glass with a hint of orange around the edge of the glass, mouth filling fruit, tasty, showing its age in a good way tonight, and a medium/long finish, flavorful aftertaste.

This was a pretty fun wine. Got a good deal on it ($36) since most people would argue it's too old. I'd say borderline, but was still fun. I'd give the nose a 93 and the palate an 89, so overall a 91. The nose was pretty complex, with raisin, brown sugar, white pepper, soy sauce (not in a bad way), mud or wet forest floor. Interestingly, after some time there was maybe a bit of sour cherry that I didn't get early on. Like I said, really fun nose. The palate was a bit on the flabby side, but still good enough to make it a worthy wine. I'd say if you have some or can get some at a good price, drink up. In a few years it will probably be too old to enjoy. My guess is that it peaked 5-10 years ago.

Deep dull cloudy purple/ruby; spiced plums and cherry streak served up on tart tannic bed keeping things lively; amazing stuff countering the notion that zin can't age gracefully; this wine was magic at first taste in '98 and retains a share of that magic still yet. 15.3 alcohol but not evident and the ripeness did not detract in the end from the vinous expression.

Barnyard, maybe some bret? Some red/black fruits but barnyard and alcohol overpower the wine.
