| Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 99 notes) | | | Tasted by feffer on 1/31/2010 & rated 89 points: very good fruit, oak, earth, and dust. (161 views) | | | Tasted by nightfire on 1/23/2010 & rated 92 points: 30-min decanting. Deep ruby color. On the nose, notes of black currant and tobacco. Awesome balance in the mouth with very fine tannins. Acidity perfectly under control with nice medium finish. very good value. (420 views) | | | Tasted by iamandyc on 1/9/2010 & rated 88 points: Could merit a higher score with a longer decant or more time in the cellar. Initially (first two hours) was very dominated by minerals, tobacco and cedar. Finish was rather harsh and overwhelmed the fruit. By the end it was coming together but only at the very end. Nose of black cherry, cedar, tobacco leaf, and licorice. Fruit-forward, medium to full palate of ripe plum, blackberry, anise, and mocha. Excellent length. Pleasant acidity. Supple tannins. Integrated oak. Terrific and ready to drink! (945 views) | | | Tasted by nschmidt on 11/9/2009 & rated 89 points: Drank at Spitzer's. (1053 views) | | | Tasted by mbalk on 11/7/2009 & rated 92 points: wonderful inky violet color. dark cherry, cassis, cedar and well balanced. (1019 views) | | | Tasted by cmclean on 11/7/2009 & rated 93 points: Getting better by the bottle. Sweet fruit, long and silky. (925 views) | | | Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 10/28/2009 & rated 90 points: Ribera del Duero $20 to $40; 10/27/2009-10/28/2009: Purple in color with some ruby siwrls. The nose has cedar, spice and plums. Nice juicy texture. On the palate, cherries, slight menthol and tannins. This took some time to open and then had probably the most complexity IMO. I liked it more than the group. 50+4+12+17+7=90 (1263 views) | | | Tasted by jdoakpark on 10/10/2009 & rated 90 points: (936 views) | | | Tasted by lovelandre on 10/4/2009: good all-arounder, 91 pts (1228 views) | | | Tasted by MarcInDSM on 9/26/2009 & rated 90 points: The general notes from all others are right on (1266 views) | | | Tasted by mason hill on 9/14/2009 & rated 90 points: (925 views) | | | Tasted by 911SCracer on 8/28/2009 & rated 91 points: Much better the second day. (1305 views) | | | Tasted by Purple Drank on 8/11/2009 & rated 91 points: This bottle had some bad H2S eggy sock aromas and little fruit when I opened it. First glass was thin and acidic with weird piercing tannins, pretty undrinkable. I thought about dumping it but instead I corked it back up and went to bed.
Day 2 started with the absolutely gorgeous nose I loved about my first bottle...huge fruits, cedar, fresh tobacco (almost like pungent skunky marijuana). Dark fruits on the palate, great balance and structure. At times the musty herbs and bright tones made me think of Pinot. This is a solid wine showing a little bottle variation.
I paid $30 which puts this in a league with a lot of other great wines so the QPR is moderate but I'm 3/3 on excellent bottles. 91+ points. Or something. (1312 views) | | | Tasted by wine4me2 on 7/16/2009 & rated 84 points: I must say...I was expecting more but it never delivered. Day 1, strong alcohol component that masked the earthiness and fruit of the wine. Day 2, Same, except slightly more subdued. I never felt the flavor of this wine come through. Better wines out there for less money. I may try a bottle of the 2005 vintage to see if I am missing something. (1457 views) | | | Tasted by Purple Drank on 7/8/2009 & rated 90 points: Opened for a day and drunk in the evening. This bottle was very different from my last; toned down nose with a bit of fruit but none of the awesome funk the last bottle was sporting. More tannins, a big oak contribution, vanilla creaminess, less fruit. Still a big spicy Tempranillo but I enjoyed this less than before - it seems much younger and a little mired in spicy oakiness.
Very good paired with pasta. 89-90 points and looking forward to another bottle soon. (1519 views) | | | Tasted by Boybart on 7/8/2009 & rated 90 points: Very nice wine after it opened up. Took about 15-20 mins to open. (1462 views) | | | Tasted by Gotwine1969 on 6/5/2009 & rated 90 points: (1167 views) | | | Tasted by AlpharettaWine on 6/3/2009 & rated 92 points: (1232 views) | | | Tasted by cmclean on 5/4/2009 & rated 91 points: Juicy, dark, deep...that nose I love. Geyserville has it, Hillside has it, this has it. A pleasure to drink. Not as good as last one. It's evolving I think, becoming more high-toned. (1675 views) | | | Tasted by Kdawg on 4/17/2009 & rated 91 points: nose: really good dark nose filled with black fruits, black cherries, cassis, cedar, and hints of mint. very dark and aromatic that is well balanced
taste: good medium/full body with good structure. Tasty tones black fruits, blackberries, black cherries, cedar and some mint tones with bits of smoke
overall: an outstanding wine. Good medium/full feel with medium+ acidity. Rich and expressive with a great feel. Drinking fairly well after a 1 hour decant, but this can certainly sit for a few years more (1902 views) | | | Tasted by Purple Drank on 4/11/2009 & rated 91 points: There was some funky rusticness on the nose when I popped the cork, fun to watch it dissipate and give way to sweet damp tobacco leaves, burnt sugar, and BBQ. Meaty depth and dark fruit. Finish is a little disappointing but and excellent wine nonetheless!
91 pts, maybe more. (1740 views) | | | Tasted by z_willus_d on 3/15/2009 & rated 90 points: Had a nice note written up for this and then my computer ate it. Doesn't feel right to try and recapture it all. 90+ (1969 views) | | | Tasted by cmclean on 3/14/2009 & rated 92 points: BIg dark red fruit, american oak, sweet nose, minty, caramel, swisher sweets, dry, long finish. this is worth far more than $32. Drinks young now, or 5 more years minimum. (1841 views) | | | Only displaying the 25 most recent notes - click to see all notes for this wine... |

About red wine
Varietal character (Appellation America) | TAPAS: Tempranillo Advocates, Producers and Amigos Society
Tempranillo is the premium red wine grape variety from the Rioja and Ribera del Duero region in Spain. Tempranillo's aromas and flavors often combine elements of berryish fruit, herbaceousness, and an earthy-leathery minerality. Being low in acidity and sugar content, it is commonly blended with Carignan (Mazuela), Grenache (Garnacha), Graciano, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net
Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos and Amontillados. But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
