  • One hour decant through a screened and aerating funnel. No sediment in the screen. During decant, a sweet aroma of dried plums came forth. Wine was clear; dark ruby bowl to a lightening rim with a medium clear halo. After resting, deep aromas of raisins and sweetened prunes along with a hint of vanilla. In the mouth: fruit was very deep, tannins all rounded. The alcohol was not noticeable in the mouth and the finish was long, smooth and slightly sweet. This wine is in a wonderful place to drink.

  • IWS Rest of Northern Italy tasting (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. A little reductive initially then chocolate, baked cherry pie, slight wood glue. With time a little black cherry and berry. Medium plus intensity acidity on the palate with ripe cherry, plain chocolate, alcohol warmth, drying talc textured tannins persist. The alcohol seems to help to carry the fruit on the finish, a little bit of residual sugar here as well as a touch of liquorice on the finish.

  • [From Coravin]

The appearance is clear and deep ruby in colour. Tears are visible.

The nose is clean. The aromas have a medium(+) intensity and show notes of black fruit (ripe black cherry flesh, ripe black plum), mineral (wet gravel, wet earth), and deliberate oxidation (coffee grounds). Swirling reveals additional notes of animal (old leather), and dried fruit (dried figs, dried dates). The wine is developing.

On the palate, the wine is dry with high acidity, high alcohol, and full body. The high level tannins are suede-like in nature. The flavours have a pronounced intensity and show notes of dried fruit (raisins, dried figs, dried dates), black fruit (black plum, sour black cherry), pungent spice (green peppercorn), mineral (wet gravel), oak (subtle ground cinnamon, subtle clove), and deliberate oxidation (bitter almond). The finish has a long length and features additional notes of animal (roast beef) and oak (dark chocolate).

This wine is of an outstanding quality. The flavours have a great balance with the acidity and alcohol. Some warmth from the alcohol shows on the back palate, but it is largely held in check. The sueded-like tannins have a great balance with the acidity. The flavours are intensely concentrated courtesy of the passito method, and this concentration also shows with the long length of the finish. In its current state, the wine shows complexity with multiple clusters of primary, secondary, and tertiary characters. The standout feature of the wine is the intense fruit. The primary fruit is more towards the black end of the spectrum with dried fruit notes. The oak treatment is very well integrated. Subtle oxidative qualities also show, adding an additional layer of complexity. The wine shows a great expression of Amarone della Valpolicella, with a full body, high tannin and intensely concentrated fruit and spice flavours.

The wine drinks well now, but is suitable for further ageing. The fruit concentration is very intense, and the tannin and acid structure should support the wine as it continues to develop tertiary characters.

  • Most Amarone are not to my taste, cloying or too rich. This one changed my perception of the DOCG and is the best Amarone I've tasted so far.
    Very elegant and perfectly balanced.
