  • eleven-vintage Ata Rangi vertical (K&L Redwood City): dark garnet with some rust edges. the red fruit is still bright on the nose, as is the sous-bois; some floral and dark cherry notes come into the mix. surprisingly bright and fruity on the entry, the vein of acidity carries the flavours to the mid palate where their intensity fades as the spice notes gain some prominence. tannins are fully integrated and persistence is moderate.

[mixed season that started cool then warmed up favourably. the peak growing period was punctuated by extremes of rain, sun and wind. some sorting for botrytis was needed]

  • Second last bottle of my 2004's. On pouring, looking a little dusty in the glass, but with an unmistakeable Martinborough nose of spice and cherry. It is so not Burgundy, and I do miss barnyard funk :-(, but it is still an impressive and enjoyable example of age-worthy NZ-style pinot noir excellence.
A couple of hours later, paired with duck confit, the combination shone, proving Ata Rangi, even from an average year, has a decade-plus of evolution and refinement.

  • This was a bit odd. At times it was enjoyable but simple. At other times the band aid brett factor was distracting. Definitely some plastic elements. The fruit was still fresh. I had this over 2 nights and while it was fine, it was night inspiring.

  • thought she might have gone, but still lovely. beautifully balance with blushing fruit after it opened up. strong finish! the color is fading, but the nose is strong with blackberry and black pepper and the faintest hit of citrus.

  • So delicate, but so powerful. The colour now a brick red with amber hue. The nose is so complex. From morello cherry, cranberry, red fruits as a base with touches of sweetness, still intensely aromatic with new aromas revealing themselves with every sniff. Some fresh meat gaminess, some strawberry topping, some button mushroom. The wine sits lightly on the front palate, very delicately, almost water like but hits with a poweful finish that lingers for minutes. Classic red cherry & juicy berries. Lovely acidity that fills the mouth and an overall complexity that you just cant put your finger on. Maybe a touch of cassia bark. The weight and flavour through the mid palate and finish is delicious. Delicious is really all that needed to be said. Will be at its peak over the next 3 years.
