Dark, inky appearance, red rim. Big upfront punch in the face of anise/liquorice/menthol with a powerful left hook of very expensive smelling oak. Hard to get past. Some VA in the background there. Intensely concentrated dark fruit on the palate. Just hugely dense and concentrated, almost soupy. Macerated strawberries, blackcurrant, slightly candied/roasted fruit. Sweet chocolatey core of flavours but then finishes dry and savoury with tannins that seem a little out of place. Weird. Feels oddly compressed, like they've tried to pack so much into this wine. Hasn't worked for me.

Served through Coravin Coonawarra Cab, Barossa Shiraz –. The Cab from 1992 plantings; the Shiraz 1955 and 1974. 20 months in a mix of 41% new French barriques; 59% in older French barriques and hogsheads – all produced and seasoned at the Yalumba cooperage. Cellared for 36 months after bottling. nearly opaque appearance. Sense of great breadth and depth on the nose. Cool, hinting at camphor/eucalyptus. Some animal fat and cream. Lovely understated perfumed quality here – blackberry and cassis with some red fruit. The palate is big cherry on attack, lively and invigorating, with some tang. Mix of berry fruit, some savoury touches – leather and dried herbs – all very clean with some chalky minerals.

Working with wine 2019 seminar 1 - Bordeaux (Est. Restaurant, George Street, Sydney): Dense, extracted, rubbery boiled black fruit backed by plenty of oak and spice. The palate is very much a reflection of the monolithic nose with mouth watering acidity married to surprisingly silky tannins. Pretty awful.
