  • I was hesitant about pulling this from my cellar as the 2016s are in many cases still painfully closed and my first bottle I had of this (a few years ago) was not very impressive (too be diplomatic). Knowing the style of the winery, these wines always need years to integrate the whole cluster and the oak, they are structured bigger wines, but once they come around they can be really stunning.
I was planning on decanting but didn‘t because the wine showed so beautifully. Very youthful deep ruby color, showing no signs of aging. There is a pretty complex array of aromatics, from herbal (stemmy) notes over dark fruit, black cherries and dark raspberries, also some Asian spices, some minerality, dark flowers/violets, also some mint and a touch of graphite. It‘s medium-full bodied, with very good persistence, there is some medium tannin that will probably integrate more with some time and medium-high acidity adding beautiful freshness. Pretty long finish. A superb village Vosne-Romanée that is at the beginning of its early drinking window (I like my wines on the younger side) but will probably age effortlessly for another 10 years or so. This was also a great QPR in today‘s Burgundy context. The style might not be for everyone, but give these wines some time. (92+)
With some more air, there was also some herbal liquor/anise-pastis/chartreuse kind of thing and super ripe dark plum notes developping. Very fascinating.

  • SLDS December 21: Slate, toast and some earth. Tightly coiled, not showing much on the nose or palate. Not friendly or enjoyable currently.
