Visiting Vancouver and the Willamette Valley; 8/26/2021-8/30/2021 (Vancouver, WA and the Willamette Valley, OR): This opaque ruby wine is a Bordeaux-style blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec, aged for 30 months in French oak barriques (50% new), followed by a year in bottle prior to commercial release. Somehow Carter was able to incorporate the ripeness of the hot vintage into a structured, full-bodied wine that does not go over the top. To be sure, there is a plethora of dark bramble fruit, but it is nicely balanced with a backbone of fresh acidity, plentiful silky tannins, restrained alcohol (14.1%) and well-assimilated oak. The fruit is likewise admirably complemented with notes of baking spices, tree bark, licorice, tobacco and bittersweet chocolate. Dense on the mid-palate and finishing long, this is an outstanding red that should show well throughout the remainder of the decade. Drink now-2030.
