Truly excellent Chardonnay that has aged gracefully and has still lots of life left. This could easily pass for a 1er cru Meursault from a good vintage. Surprisingly pale color given its age. Very pretty perfume - expressive and elegant with notes of pear, linden flowers and a green (fennel?) note. The palate is round and oily, but never heavy. Peaches, cream and fresh hazlenuts. A touch of bitterness leads into a long finish. Excellent! Wish I had more!

The 2000 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay was light straw yellow in color with a slight nose that I found lovely but difficult to describe. Lemon, butter, green apple, and perhaps some pear and mellon were all present on the palate along with a hint of minerality. This was a wine of impeccable balance with all of the varietal traits present in just the right way; not too over the top fruit wise; not too over the top in butter/creaminess. The wine had a beautiful mouth feel and just enough acidity. After all these years the wine retained a sublime richness that I would not have expected. Hard to imagine a better chardonnay. I thought that it paired nicely with a sophisticated dish of pan seared Halibut over a bed of spinach with a topping of foie gras and a pear brandy sauce.

St. Valentine's Day - 1974 Montelena Dinner (New Jersey): Light golden yellow color that belies its age. Nose is light to medium in strength with pear, butterscotch and creamy vanilla. on the palate I get the butterscotch and cream and pear as well but also some citrus. Very round and soft in the mouth with little acidity left in the bottle. It went nicely with the mushroom and macadamia crusted halibut, foie gras and pear brand sauce...but not as well as the accompanying Hanzell 2004 chard. My last bottle and after having several nice experiences and one oxidized bottle I think it was perfect timing on drinking my last bottle.

Nice citrus - lemon, lime, stone, floral, good acidity. Bright. Elegant - Burgundian. Really enjoyable. 91+
