Tasted single blind against the 1999 Domaine Leroy Meursault Genevrieres 1er Cru. 12 out of 14 people thought the Montelena was the French wine and liked it more. The Montelena was clearly the more subtle, more elegant, more mellow wine. It displayed no oak while the Leroy had a ton. Knowing that the Montelena was unoaked, I correctly guessed the wines. Unlike the others, I was disappointed because I had hoped that the Montelena would be more fresh, with more apple and pear notes, with more complexity - tropical notes, etc. The Montelena was ok, but it really wasn't very exciting to me. If this is a representative bottle, it would have been better a while ago.

Absolutely gorgeous color, deep golden hue that almost looks like cooking oil. Very expressive nose, minerals, smoke, bright oak, lemon zest, lychee fruit and a hint of creaminess. Lingering underneath is a hint of spice, some pineapple rind and a touch of lemon seed. Palate has some great weight, creaminess, still a nice heavy dose of oak even after 11 years of age. More lemon like fruits, Minerals and acid carry the fruit through the middle and finishes with spicy oak and creme fraiche. The texture of the wine is rather silky and seamless, packing tremendous concentration yet remaining somewhat delicate. Hint of white flowers, starfruit and more spicy oak on the finish. A great wine that is drinking very young. If I were to guess I would say this has another 5+ years till peak.

Very nice with layers of rich white fruits, hazelnut and gentle touches of vanilla and toast in the background, polished and elegant in the mouth with nice acidity balancing the richness and weight and good length.
