  • A real disappointment. Fill level very high, no signs of leakage. Heavy sediment, lost most of its' color, pale mahogany brown, very transparent, stewed plum, raisinated, tart short finish. Just unlucky.

  • Forgot that I'd written a note on this wine almost 9 years ago and in that time it's softened a bit from age but very much the same profile. On the nose it's burnt espresso, tar, cocoa powder, cooked plums and a wisp of acetate volatility. Weirdly bitter palate, again like burnt coffee, with some iodine, black licorice, cracked peppercorn, kind of ashy/volcanic/severe in its mineral sense. Normally I see a 40+ year old wine with notes of coffee and cooked plums and I'd say it's maderized, but that's just one disparate element of this wine because the structure is holding firm with good color and extant fruit. A wine that defies categorization and scoring.

Last time I suggested this might be mistaken for something from Southern Italy and I'll echo that today - I wouldn't be surprised to hear someone call this an adolescent Aglianico/Cabernet blend from Campania.

  • Bought from winery library. Pristine bottle, mid neck fill. Dark, inky purple with some bricking. Significant sediment upon decanting. Big fruity nose of blackberry, dark cherry, a hint of bubble gum, leather and some sous bois. Sweet initially on the palate followed quickly by dark cherry, blueberry, sweet spice, minerals, solvent and bramble. Resolved tannins still retaining grip in a long finish of grapes, skins and stems. With time in the glass, more tertiary flavors emerge - iodine, leather, nuts and wood. This is a fruit bomb that had the underpinnings to last well into its 40's with the alcohol at 15.7%! As another poster stated, "bizarre!"

  • Young, black color with red meniscus, complex nose of briar, cherries, red currants, light mint/herbs, vanilla. Medium bodied on the palate with a core of red licorice tinged cherry fruit and medium finish. Deserves an extra point for longevity...most wines from 76 are past it...this is full on and I don't see a problem with another 10-15 years.

  • Perfect fill, youthful dark red color, and a lot of sediment. This has a young berry, coffee, chocolate, crushed herb, shoe polish nose showing some alcohol. On the palate tar, licorice, mineral, bitter. This is utterly unevolved and could pass a very young wine. Bizarre. Served blind I might guess something from Southern Italy.
