A private lunch (Restaurant Bak, Amsterdam, NL): Magnum. In essence a refined wine, but aromatically still on the wild side, especially on the stalky nose, smoked meat and blackberries. On the palate flavours of peaches and roses, and a silky, creamy texture announce future finesse. Sandy tannins enveloped in soft flesh, excellent persistence. Needs time.

Aromas of forest berries, espacially cowberries. Fresh, wild and raw, and characterized by a lot of lees this year. Quite soft mouth feeling, with plenty of acidity and a tight and tart finish. Needs several years in the cellar to reveal the seductive C-R aromas.

My friends went to France and brought back some wine (Gothenburg): Deep and intoxicating nose. Very floral and savory. Blackberries, plum skin, horse, violets, balsamic spice, menthol and wet granite. Initially a slight fizz but that’s solved with some swirling. Vibrant acidity, great structure and loaded with fresh vibrant black fruits. Great intensity with layers upon layers. Long and seamless finish. Superb now but can age.

Licorice, anise, violets, lavender. Blackberry and plum fruits. Tannic still, aromatic and super expressive. Dark floral bomb, my type of cote rotie.

Meaty, smoky nose with blackberry. Similar palate. Needs some air but true to Stephan style, feminine and light tannins.
