  • Two Clos to Call - Impromptu Mid-week Dinner at Cafe de HK (Cafe de HK, Balestier Road): I enjoyed this. It had a nose of very smoky tar wed to fragrant spice, tobacco and herb notes, all swirling around a core bright black fruited aromas - cassis I thought - and a really nice whiff of rose petals. Quite a pretty nose - just what you would expect of a Rabaja. The palate started out with a very fresh attack, with fine acidity and equally fine tannins shaped around some pure black cherry fruit and a bit of smoky spice. The wine seems to have softened significantly from its youth, but there was still a little chew on it; a firmness of structure underneath a a velevty cloak, especially at the finish, which still had a little bite. Rather too simple to be a great wine, but this was certainly enjoyable. A good, solid Rabaja. Good with a bit of smoked duck on the night, but I think it still has a few years to go.

  • Kind of ehhh. Not much there. Others liked it more than I did.

  • Good solid bottle. Not spectacular, but a good mix of fruit and earth, with relatively smooth tannins for a '96.

  • My last bottle of this was a bit disappointing, but this one was not. Really beautiful nose with all the classic aromas you expect from Rabaja. A bit on the lighter side on the palate, which is fine, the world needs all kinds. I don't really view this wine as a long term ager, and as this was my last bottle, I live what I preach. I have to say that this wine was maybe more enjoyable in it's dramatic youth where it had much more apparent depth than it has shown lately. Something to consider with future vintages.

  • A lovely fruity nose of red cherry and plum is quite aggressive, while the palate is considerably more austere and tart, showing in particularly an acidic note of under ripened strawberry. A perfect companion for a lovely duck confit. Drink now to 2012.
