Vieux Château-Saint-André lies in the Montagne-Saint-Emilion appellation and was created in 1978 by Jean-Claude Berrouet, former winemaker at Petrus. His son has managed the estate since 2002, in addition to other properties such as Château Samion (Lalande-de-Pomerol) and another in Irouléguy.
“My father has had a big influence on my philosophy,” says Jeff Berrouet on a Zoom call in January 2021. Family stories in wine are nothing new, particularly in Bordeaux. But there are winemaking families, and there are winemaking families. The Berrouets are best known for their work at Petrus. Patriarch Jean-Claude – Jeff’s father – was the winemaker at that Pomerol icon for 44 vintages. Jeff’s brother, Olivier, makes wine there today.

Retailer tasting: Red and dark berries, ok acidity and slightly drying tannin in the finish. I was a bit disappointed.

PnD let air for 2hrs.
Clear. Medium ruby.
Clean. Medium intensity with aroma of red currant plum tobacco green peppercorn and sage.
Dry. Medium alcohol. Medium medium tannins. Medium acidity. Medium intensity with flavours of red currant green peppercorn sage and tobacco
Medium finish good. Drink now not suitable for further ageing. Racy lacks some mid palate flesh. Great with steak frites.
