Community Tasting Notes (3)

  • Night one (I'll preface this note with a saying that I heard from someone who's had a lot more Eyrie than me. "You're never supposed to enjoy Eyrie PG on night one."): the nose is very pent up with tart green fruit, a little waxiness but not exactly leesy, you can definitely tell there is a generosity underneath wanting to come out, herbs and a somewhat chalky finish are really interesting but I would have a ton of trouble coming anywhere close on this if tasting blind, alcohol stands out a bit but there's some serious acid structure lurking there too; while interesting I'm not getting a lot of joy out of the wine now because this austerity is defining it, eager to find out more about this tomorrow. Update: the wine is still somewhat austere, phenolic, and intensely mineral, what seemed chalky on day one has given way to a fennel and volcanic finish on day two, still a brick house structurally, the fruit may be showing only slightly more generous as well as a little more almond and biscuit; I now know of what this reminds me- Etna Bianco especially Carricante which I find somewhat neutral and boring in their trajectory with an almost bitter mineral, I could also probably go Fiano with a little age; Night 3: the wine has finally gotten over itself and the texture is more open and accessible, waxy and rich yet enough muscle to last a couple more nights I'm sure but this is finally gone and of course the last sip is the best...guess the above adage is true for this bottle.

  • This bottle was really quite superb. The nose started with mango and pineapple, then the tropicality began to fade and it became more peach and pear alongside orchard blossoms and even a hint of minerality. The palate had great freshness to balance the ripe orchard fruits and a long saline tinged finish. Really good.

  • This is delicious. Borderline exotic and rich, but still has enough energy and lift to be very tasty. Needs food for me, but with an aromatic pairing (curry in this case, not too spicy) it was really nice. Lots of upside for cellaring.
