Second bottle and much better. Cork remains rubbish so have a tea strainer handy. Fresher palate with the usual plus cherry and cola. Longer and wider, needs protein but lovely wine….just not Saturday night quality 17.5.

Medium scarlet in colour with some bricking. We have drunk a lot of OP&OH this year, so I purchased some older examples at auction. The cork is rubbish, be warned. The wine opens with red fruits, leather and spice. Faint olive tapenade but it seems to have been “stretched” compared to the more recent vintages. Cedar, leather, earth, black fruits it’s delicious but it does fade quickly in the glass. Open NOW and enjoy it 17.

Festival of Phil (Phil's place, Putney, Sydney): Savoury, spicy, earthy, leathery, slightly chalky almost smoky notes. Savoury with tightly textured tannins, muted black fruits especially plum, slight alcohol warmth on the finish. Okay.

GC with Kev and the Crew: Blind. Cherry, leather saddle, herb, blackberry and eucalyptus. Medium bodied with good savoury spices and leathery notes. Old school classic Hunter Valley style that was picked out by most at the table. Very nice bottle of this wine.

Supper at Mal's (Mal's place, Melrose Park, Sydney): Initially on the nose vanilla, cream, slight herbaceous notes, plums, black peppercorns. With time slightly dusty with green peppercorns and quite perfumed. In the mouth juicy plums, fine persistent tannins, leather, long with flavours of vanilla, cream, peppercorns, sweet tobacco. Finishes very savoury
