  • Totally mature at age 19, which is more than you can say for humans! The golden color is tinged with a hint of orange, and the aromatics reflect that, as there is an orange peel essence that I often associate with fully mature Riesling. It's not tired or drying out though. It's just mature, and still putting out a lighting fast jab. The acidity is more apparent, as there is no more youthful sweetness. It's barely halbtrocken now, and showing mineral and spice notes in the mid-palate. I bought a half dozen when this was released in 2002. This was the final bottle. It's hard to say goodbye to a 2001 Riesling. The vintage was (and is) special. There's still some spätlese and auslese in the cellar, and so there will be more moments. They'll just be different.

  • Drank at Morgans. Good acidity, nice minerality with still good fruit level. White fruit, peaches & minerals. Not biting acidity but sufficient to offset the slight sweetness. Turned a bit flabby in the glass. On the decline. Drink up

  • Very similar impression to Salil. I can imagine that this wine might have had a bit more sugar when it was young. At 14, it is still going strong. Loads of freshness from the acidity and a backing of citrus and mineral. Very old school. Drink now or over the next 10 years.

  • Tastes almost trocken, there's ripe, bright apple and citrus fruit here tinged with floral and mature smoky notes, but there's barely any sense of sweetness now with tremendous acidity that keeps this razor sharp and incredibly light on its feet. Very refreshing, bright and long, this is lovely.

  • What a little gem this is. If forced to guess I would have said halbtrocken or feinherb, as the fruit is lively but the wine drinks dry. Tree fruit, flowers, minerals and a little bit of smoke all come together, with a balance that makes it a pleasure to drink on its own, while it also works exceedingly well with food. This is a fabulous kabinett that has continued to develop and improve for much longer than I thought it would based on prior bottles.

Rockss and Fruit

(Hexamer Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Kabinett) Peaches, chalk, stones and lime on a nose that just screams 2001. So juicy and concentrated on the palate. Perfectly ripe flavors of mangoes and peaches with a nice mineral backbone. Long finish. So expressive right now but I think this even has more in reserve. Closes down a touch on the finish then magically reappears minutes later. This will age.
