SMOKEY nose. Perfect for smoked sausage meal at Simpatica Restaurant with Simon and Eva in Portland, OR. The meal was a Louisiana themed meal of smoked sausage, ham, and meatball with rice and beans combo, the wine was incredibly better after tasting the sausage vs. the other meats. Eating with the perfect food illuminated for all of us at the table what a difference the right food makes! The smoke is stronger in the 2002 ex umbris than the 2005, but I will not drink ex umbris from now on without smoked (and spicy) meats.

This wine is much less impressive than the last time I had it. I can still remember the bacon nose. Unfortunately, I do not get as much this time. I find roasted meat, graphite, smoke, and a touch of tomato on the nose. The palate is lush with with smoke, minerality, and some sweet black fruit. There is, however, less fruit than last time. I wonder if it is closing down a bit.

Seattle Tasting Group does 'Go-to Wines' (Seattle, WA, USA): This was the surprise of the night. The nose of bacon, violet and tar screamed of Côte-Rôtie. This is showing quite young. Very spicy and smoky on the palate. This took about 25 minutes in the glass before fruit started to emerge. The finish on this is not terribly powerful but long and pretty.

Gorgeous smoke and powerful fruit on nose and palate. Delicious!

smoky as described on the bottle. Still bordering on undrinkable-- don't think it was flawed though.
