  • Typical oxidized notes that you would expect from this producer. Took a minute for the acid to come though. But finished nicely

  • What a great wine! Rather than oxidative notes, I feel "velo" - crianza biológica. Some smoky notes, too. In the mouth, a delightful contrast of rich and slighty alcoholic on the one hand, and salty and austere on the other. Really my style of Chardonnay, a grape variety that I often find quite boring. The combination with (fat and big) oysters and sea urchins was mind-blowing.

  • PHMG WAG: Tour de France 2022 (Chateau Lyon): OK!? Who put sherry in my Chard? and hazelnuts... This is a bit funky! Better with food and maybe an acquired taste. Definitely a conversation piece. Apple, white citrus, marzipan, earth and a smidge of Tokaji.

  • 2017 Chardonnay: Domaine de Montbourgeau L'Etoile: Jura, France: Chardonnay 95%, Savagnin 5%: Restaurant pop and pour to a rich golden color, in the dim lighting looked like apple juice at times. Nice stinging aroma notes of red apple, hazelnut, apple cider, and sour beer. Palate is weightier than I expected, but continues with additional honey and cheese rind oxidation. Admittedly the first glass was perhaps a bit off putting, but with a bit of time and some delicious food quickly remedied. Throughout the bottle though this wine stayed complex and with a certain amount of funk with those oxidized type characteristics.

Wine Making Notes: Wine ferments spontaneously in stainless-steel tanks, whole-cluster direct pressing. Domaine de Montbourgeau is situated in the southwestern area of the Jura, in the village of L’Etoile, meaning 'star,' named for the many ancient starfish fossils found in the soils of this appellation.
