Fairly dark ruby, though starting to show bricky glints throughout. Beautiful nose: Merlot plumminess to the fore, sweet warm oak - surprisingly reminiscent of a good Rioja. On the palate, medium to full bodied, rich; smooth tannins, medium length; perfectly delicious fruit and berry flavours, with pencil-box in the background. I'm amazed it's still tasting largely of primary fruity - at this age? from one of the worst vintages (THE worst, many say) in recent decades. I had modest expectations, and this far surpasses them. In fact it surpasses any Bordeaux I've had for a long time. A tremendous win in tonight's round of Old Wine Roulette, and a suitable celebratory bottle with today's events in France in mind. 12.5%, cork.
