  • I thought I was getting the regular vintage - indeed I wasn't aware the 'Collection' (late release) stretched back as far as '82. It lacks the newer branding. Impeccable condition - in solid, lightly decorated wooden case (which lists all the vintages up to 1998, interestingly), the bottle itself is pristine.

Pressure on opening, plentiful foam on pouring. Mid gold - paler than I'd expect. The nose leaps from the glass, scenting the air, which is always a good sign. Lots of crisp apple and pear, some apricot. On deep inhalation, the oily-nutty-coffee-mushroom that is unmistakably old champagne. Soft, light mousse on the tongue. Quite delicate and floral, nice acidity, but not as good as many other similar wines I've had. There's something slightly tiresome about the flavour, maybe a herbaceous note - it's not bad, just a little insistent, perhaps, and yet ever so slightly dilute for a good vintage wine, especially on the finish.

Always a privilege to drink my own vintage, anyhow, and it shows there are still bargains to be had in champagne over 35 years old. Will be interesting to compare it to the rosé in a few days. Disgorged August 2003. [Cork + cage; 12.5% abv; WinePro, £168].
