This. Was. Spectacular. Rich, thick, juicy. Palate was full of dark fruit, warm spices, and a hint of bacon fat. Everything was well-integrated and the finish was 30+ seconds. Some sediment. I wish I had five more bottles. Paired perfectly with shawarma rubbed lamb loin.

Consumed over 2 days (vacuvined), note from day 2. Nose: Medium-plus expressiveness, dark fruit - predominately blackberry with blueberry undertones, black pepper, spice, and dark earth. Palate: Full bodied, blueberry and spice dominate up front with pepper and spice contributing to a nice mid-palate lift, earthy notes join with spice and pepper notes to dominate the back-end and linger through a medium-plus (45-60 seconds) finish. This is drinking much better on day 2, more resolved and showing more complexity. That's an indication the best days are yet to come for this 14+ year old Australian petite sirah, impressive.

This bottle is drinking so beautifully right now. Just wonderful. Not the typical raiseny pitete syrah style but very smooth. Your waiting all these years has been rewarded.

Color and fruit holding up very well. Needs 2 plus hours of decanting. Big black and purple fruit with earthy quality & nose. Tannins fairly well resolved. In a good drinking window. Would pair well with grilled meat and/or pasta w/red sauce. Smooth from beginning to end. Not a huge fruit bomb like some newer California PS's........much more refined. Had we tasted blind, we probably would have considered it "old world."

Accessed with Coravin. Dark purple color. Jammy nose of blackberries, cassis/black currant, elderberries, flowers and some sweet spices. On the palate there are again jammy notes of dark berries, some minerals and sweet spices like cinnamon. It’s pretty full bodied with medium+ acidity and medium-high tannin that is well covered under the layers of fruit. Long finish. Durif is a different name for Petite Sirah and this wine shares a lot of the qualities with the Californian version, but with an extra level of fruit. It’s a fruitbomb, yes, but it has a nice tannic structure and nice acidity providing freshness.

(HOWLING DOG Massena) Howling Dog Dear Friends, The last time I tasted a rugged wine with potential like this was four years ago - it was a transcendental experience. The wine was the 1970 Swan Napa Gamay - certainly one of the greatest (and rarest) wines ever produced in California history and one the most astute collectors from around the world would chomp at the bit to try. I thank Richard Leland for the experience and can only hope this wine turns out to be half of what emerged from the chrysalis that evening... Dan Standish’s version of the above mentioned Swan is this wine. It is not Shiraz - it is Petit Sirah (Petite Syrah). It will make lovers of Turley “Hayne” Petite Syrah perk up with much interest - if you are into the biggest, blackest molasses masquerading as a vinous beverage (but still somehow balanced and full of marvelous intrigue), this is for you. This wine is like chewing the essence of the red soil that covers the Barossa Valley and Dan Standish harnessed it with maximum gusto. I’d like to see this as a blind entrant up against the very best Madiran and Cahors (although it is far more exotic, like a great older vintage of Thackrey’s Sirius Marston). Whether Petite Syrah is actually Durif is still up for conjecture but the reward is in the bottle. An eye opening wine with what should have a nearly endless future in the cellar: ONE SMALL SHIPMENT ONLY with perfect provenance 2005 Massena “The Howling Dog” (Petit Sirah - or is it Durif?) (this wine is far cheaper in Australia but it’s been quite difficult to get so I’m not going to complain - this should be the going rate in the US if you can find it but quantities are very small) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Aus9919 ------ End of Forwarded Message
