The first time I had a Clos Tavannes with some age on it was when Gérard Potel served me blind the 1966 in 1989 or 1990. It was super and I and my ITB friend both guessed it from the Côte de Nuits. This wine recalls that one from a vintage 30 years before. Now mature with the fierce 1996 acidity resolved, the wine starts with forest floor aromas and in the mouth it opens to pure dark and red cherry fruit that is on the mouth, too. Good length, intriguing complexity. This is from the Nic Potel bottling that bears his father's signature in the upper-left corner (there is a separate Landanger bottling), Lot L 9606. Cellared since original release.

(Pousse d'Or Santenay Clos Tavannes) Medium ruby with some age now evident at the rim. Nose is oaky, but it is sweet and deep rather than toasty with some stewed red fruit. Palate is quite thick with concentrated cherry and juicy mouthwatering acidity. Quite long but just a little astingency at the end. Still very good plus.

Still dense, though soft textured, deep and intriguing, hints of red fruit
