  • Dark red with clear edges. Dark cherry and vanilla nose. Dry cherry and earth flavor and a slightly rich dry finish.

  • {cork, 14%} A little musty, a bit leathery; herbs and cedar; old cabernet with an authentic Pyrenees minty/eucalypt touch. Gentle powdery tannins, still some natural-tasting acidity, although it's fairly discreet now. Generally low intensity wine, medium-bodied, with a dry, medium length finish. Similar note to last year; same 'drink-up' conclusion.

  • {cork, 14%} Looks old. Still dark, but garnet flashed with mahogany. The nose is a little musty at first, but blows off to present a wonderfully cedary, authentically cabernet, but - thanks to a dash of eucalypt - very Australian bouquet. There are plenty of basil-like herbs, a curranty undertone, and distinct cedary french oak. The palate doesn't quite match the promise; it's pretty well balanced, covering most of the palate without undue emphasis on any one area, rides on very dry, medium-strength dusty tannins, and finishes medium length, dry and savoury. The reservation is that the flavours - ripe curranty fruits and aging oak - are a bit one dimensional and lacking in the kaleidescopic effect you hope for after 14 years. Taltarni always had a reputation for long-living, uncompromising, Bordeaux-style reds that I felt it never seemed to quite live up to; the fruit always somehow faded into simplicity while the structure waited about to hold up something more impressive. They were never priced at a level that reflected where they were apparently aiming, so you can't really complain about being ripped off, but still there's a shade of disappointment about this that's probably not justified by its objective showing in the glass. The winemaking team has all changed since then, so it will be interesting to see what happens in the future. As for this, well, it's not about to fall over by any means, but I don't think any additional drinking pleasure will be gained by further cellar time. Good looking cork, though.
