  • {cork, 14.1%} Almost exactly what I said a year ago. Dusty, astringent, vaguely herbal and eucalypt cabernet. Medium-bodied. Just doesn't draw you in somehow. Back label says 8-10 years; doesn't auger well if this is at its most interesting. Drink anytime really, just don't expect too much exciting drinking. Great cork, by the way.

  • Good wine, nice balance of oak and eucalyptus

  • {cork, 14.1%} Very dark garnet. Classic Oz old-school minty-eucalyptus nose, with some development apparent. Lots of ripe but dark green characters on the palate; olives, mostly; mint, herbs. It never quite gets to proper blackcurrant, and although it has a medium-bodied cabernet-kind of austerity about it, there's not a lot of mystery about it to tantalise the palate. It's not unbalanced - the acid, oak, and fine powdery tannins are OK, alcohol doesn't stick out too much - but the palate never really hints at anything new or multi-faceted. It's like walking around an army camp - everything is the same relentless dark green, and you yearn for something to catch your interest. Will presumably age for years, but will likely just get older, not more interesting. In fairness, this sold for mid-$20s on release, so perhaps it's rather demanding to expect a top-Bordeaux substitute, but given the age and pedigree of Taltarni's vineyards, somehow I expected something better. 2006 was in the long dry spell which afflicted most of Australia's south-eastern wine regions; maybe the wine just reflects the rather extreme conditions which were not very conducive to the growing of perfectly balanced grapes...

  • Élégant plutôt que "in your face".
