The Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben is a Blaufränkisch selection from the oldest and best vineyards. The Lutzmannsburg plateau was formed from a primeval volcano, on which different layers were deposited over time. Today one can find sediments of the Pannonian sea in the form of calcareous sandstone, loam, sand and clay as well as deposits of volcanic nature. For the 2018 Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben was selected from six plots. The age of the vines is between 85 and 110 years. About 20% were fermented as whole clusters with rape. After spontaneous introduction, fermentation lasted 23 to 28 days in open wooden vats. After a very careful pressing directly into 500 and 600 liter barrels, the wine was left on full lees for eleven months, where spontaneous malolactic fermentation took place. The first drawdown took place after about a year, after which the Blaufränkisch aged for another twelve months in 500-liter barrels. Bottled at the end of September 2019, there were no finings, no filtration and only minor additions of sulfites.
Deep red between ruby and garnet with violet highlights.
Herbs, elderberries, black cherries and mulberries combined with a little tar, peat and wood are the markers by which one can currently assess the potential of this great Burgenländer. The wine's dark, multi-faceted aromatics are seductive from the start. It fans out again significantly after hours with plenty of air, showing more and more berry, stone and violet aromas.
The 2018 Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben is wine that is already showing its full potential after four years, but it is also just that. It is one that should ideally age for a decade, even though it seems so seductive now. It seems as dense and generous as it is balanced and precise. The Blaufränkisch oscillates between red and dark berries, wild herbs, stone and earthy notes, offering plenty of tannin, but it seems well-measured, ripe and elegant. The wine clothes the palate with velvet and silk, dancing on the tongue despite the depth and richness it possesses. This is already great now, but will become more complex and introspective.
