  • Barolo vs Burgundy at about 20 years: Opened about four hours before the tasting.
Drunk next to a Grand Cru of the same vintage to test its ambition to play at that level. This was probably unfair, since the grape does not have a similar texture. This had more substance to chew on and could not compare to the elegance and playfulness of a top GC. But still, showing very well at 21+ years of age, now probably at maturity, with leathery, spicy and earthy notes emerging.
Retasted two evenings later, on its own, it showed still very strong. Yes, the comparison is unfair.

  • A Delightful Dinner in Vienna: Dull ruby. Mixed fruit/soil aromas. Medium weight, excellent concentration of blue-tinged fruit, soil, fine acidity, and faded remaining tannins. I have no experience with aged examples of this varietal and was so impressed with its complexity and staying power, but I guess this is the problem with trying the best in class as your introduction.

  • HWS Game dinner 2015: Dark and red forest fruits, some earth and autumn forest in the bouquet. On the palate the same fruits, some herbs and spices, good acidity and mild tannin with a pleasant bite. Full bodied and yet elegant and fairly complex wine. We drank it from magnum and it was beautiful with still a lot of life left.
