  • Day one this shows tart red and black fruit with a distinct smokiness that detracts from everything else. Quite tannic, but not overpowering. On day two the smoky note has evolved to more of a typical herbal note and the wine has softened considerably; regardless it's still in the bottom tranche of Loire reds I've tried.

  • 13.5%, organic / bio. This is the entry level wine. Tasted over the course of three days. From the producer’s website:

“Our “Tuffe” cuvée, previously known as “Grande Cuvée” is the largest one: 80 to 100,000 bottles/year, depending on the vintage. Coming from 15 parcels of old and young Cabernet Franc vines, Tuffe is a blend from different “terroirs”, scattered around Saumur and Dampierre/Loire. Here the common denominator is the tuffeau (around Saumur, we would say “la Tuffe”), which can be found at anything from 1 foot to a couple of yards underneath the surface.”

Agree with viniferatu and paul852. This is good stuff!

  • Solid value but not a lot more in this vintage. It hits the right notes but nothing very expressively. Nice acid and tannin to keep it balanced. The cork popped a bit on night two indicating something happening inside. It also showed more classic on night two where it was a bit washed out and fruitier on night one. Hopefully this house hasn't fallen under the spell of the natural and partial carbonic dogma.

  • This was fine, but I think you can find better Loire CF for the price ($19). Not bad, but a bit simple and didn't quite have the verve I like in Chinon/Saumur.

  • This benefits from a little air and then it's a very nice, fresh cab franc. I can't really add much to Viniferatu's TN below.

Very decent QPR at the ~US$20 that I paid.
