Balsamic vinegar, tobacco, vanilla, coconut, sunscreen, dried raspberries and dried red cherries on the nose. The palate is similar, except the fruits are darker - black cherries and dark plums. They're still in that cooked/dried/preserved state though. The oak notes are unchanged. Medium intensity of both flavors and aromas.
Medium + body with medium + acid and big medium + tannins that show no signs of going anywhere for the moment. Developing. Not bad right now; but this wine would really benefit from some tertiary notes. Recommend holding it for 3-5 more years at least.

Classic, not overly complex or concentrated Rioja Reserva (100 percent Tempranillo) that was aged for eighteen months in American oak barrels (20 percent new). Color: deep ruby-red with a slightly watery rim. Bouquet: rather weak nose showing scents of sour cherry, strawberry, roasted coffee and some oaky nuances. On the palate: a medium- to full-bodied wine with nice red and black berry fruit, quite unresolved tannins and a dominant acid structure. Finish: reasonable aftertaste. The wine lacks depth and elegance for the moment, and I have serious doubts whether it will become more harmonious with bottle age.

100% Tempranillo from 90 ha of vineyards located within the municipality of Haro, overlooking the Ebro River, encompassing different ecosystems and terroirs. Traditional winemaking: destemming, crushing, moderately long maceration before alcoholic and malolactic fermentations. Lightly clarified and aged 18 months in American oak barrels (20% new) with 3 rackings. In bottled at least two years before release. 14% Abv. Background: Viña Pomal is the flagship brand of Bodegas Bilbaínas founded in Haro in 1901. Technical Director/Winemaker: Mayte Calvo de la Banda Head Winemaker: Diego Pinilla Navarro
A(ccuracy)=2: Med ruby/garnet. Coconutty fragrant Rioja. B(alance)=2: Fresh fruit with adequate structure. C(omplexity)=2: Red and dark berries, spices, American oak. D(epth)=1: Tangy mouthfeel. Even palate and finish.
Wine Tally Score [2,2,2,1] = 7/10
Reliable standard, especially for American oak addicts.

Paid 13€ in San Sebastian. Well worth that. Fairy simple and not complex but a great quaffing wine. Don't know if you can find this in the US.
