Similar to some of the other 2020 Thivin bottlings, this is quite dense, and the fruit is much darker than I would normally expect. There’s also a cinnamon spice note that is tasty but unexpected. I enjoyed the wine, but it left me wondering if this is what we have come to with climate changed Beaujolais.

3+ months after the prior: This was, unfortunately but not surprisingly, about the same. We find it too deep and dense/ ponderous. The back label says 13.5, but wonder if it’s higher. We are looking forward to the 21s, which should be more restrained in style. Consistent and disappointing results over three nights.

Quite dark, and surprisingly heavy / somewhat ponderous. And we would’ve preferred more acidity. We have enjoyed more some of the lesser bottlings of this house. Ultimately, it went well enough with brash barbecue.

A private dinner with friends (Noble Rot Wine Bar & Restaurant, London, UK): Griotte is a south-east facing 5 hectare plot in the lieu-dit Brulhié halfway up the hill, shallow soil over metadiorite, made from Gamay Noir complanted with 1-2% Chardonnay, part whole bunch fermentation, aged in large barrels for 7-9 months. Ripe fruit flavours balanced by a lovely freshness, juicy and spicy, quite full and broad-shouldered, with the minerally energy of the volcanic bedrock shining through very nicely.

Tasting Ground official tasting, 2020 Chateau Thivin (Oinoscent): Our “solar” plot that benefits from a fine south-east-facing position on steep slopes. Grape varieites : A majority of white-juiced Gamay noir and a few Chardonnay vines that add finesse (1–2%) Terroir : 5 ha south-facing vineyard half-way up the hillside; already famous in the 17th century, as Louvet wrote in his History of the Beaujolais Wine Region written in 1635: “on the hill of Brulhié (Brouilly), in the parish of Oudenas (Odenas) […] which slope or hill bears the best wines of the region”. Shallow soil over blue stones, a magmatic rock also called Metadiorite. Cultivation : The vines are at a density of 7,000 vines/ha laid out with grassed and flower strips for the diversification of the flora and to let our small, light tractors through, we alternate tilling with controlled natural grassing. Hand-picking. Converting to Organic, Terra Vitis certified for 12 years Vinification : The grapes are wholly picked by hand and vinified partly in whole bunches in our hillside cellars, whose successive levels allow us to make maximum use of gravity, so as to avoid using either pumps or conveyors for the grapes. After pressing, the wine is matured in oak tuns for 7–9 months. -//- The wine shows medium intensity, the fruit is darker and riper, cherries, more earthy and oaky than 7 vignes. In the palate, the wine shows the same flavor profile, dark fruit, tight tannins, 13.50%, chocolate (!) notes, the oak us more upfront, medium acidity, a touch leathery, long finish. impressive
