Negro Amaro from Salento can vary. This is a more extracted, warmer climate, oaked up expression of the grape.
Ripe blackberries, ripe dark plums, tarragon, tobacco smoke, smoked wood and bitter green herbs on the nose. Flavors consistent with the aromas but the oak feels stronger on the palate - an intense note of vanilla joins in. Full bodied with medium tannin and medium acid. It's big but mellow on the palate.
Made for the American market? Maybe. But Puglia is "Italy's new world wine region" after all. This still feels true to the variety's character even if it is a bit over extracted.

A birthday dinner at Sydenham: Ripe and plush, not particularly subtle but delicious. Good match with opso bucco with pearl barley saffron risotto.
