  • Blackcurrant filled nose with a touch of leather and cedar. The palate is still quite vibrant with good acidity and plump black fruits. The fruit is maybe a touch baked at times, the tannins are fully integrated. Drinking well and not showing any signs of old age.

  • Very similar to the last bottle. Big, fruit forward nose with a blackcurrant jam character. Full and quite rich with good depth of flavour. Feels maybe a little stewed at times. Nice bramble fruit and fine, well integrated tannins. Very nice.

  • Ruby red with an intense vibrant nose, full of sweet blackcurrant fruit and a hint of vanillin. Well structured, the tannins are cleansing and dry balancing the sweet blackberry fruit and coffee notes. Went perfectly with roast beef which bought a ripeness of fruit to the fore. Well balanced with plenty of time left.

  • As with the 2003 vintage, I bought a number of these on release and drank most of them young. I managed to set aside three bottles of this to see how they would hold up. My last bottle of the 2001 was almost a year ago, and I wasn't to pleased with how it was holding up. Well, lets just say bottle variation can sometimes be a nasty thing. This bottle in no-way resembles that bottle I had almost a year ago. Although not decanted, It took about one hour for this to really start strutting itself...plenty of white pepper dominate a palate of bright cherries, its dusty texture across the palate, fresh acidity, a finish that gets longer the more air this gets, and tannins that continue to expose themselves, whats not to like! This is an excellent bottle of Vertente and I was shocked at how well this bottle is holding up. I have one bottle left and I hope it shows as well as this bottle!

  • I bought a good number of these on release and drank most of them early on, but I also thought it would be fun to put a few aside and see how they would age. The best I recall, the last time I had one was about 3 years ago. So last night it was time to check in and see how she was holding up.

Well, lets just say time wasn't kind to this bottle. Showing a touch of oxidation on the palate, fruit that was drying out, a simple palate, with a short finish. The one thing that hadn't happened was mellowing of the tannins. This was still loaded with some big dusty tannins that took me by surprise. Nothing flashy here and this is fully past its prime. My remaining two bottle will be cracked very soon. So if you happen to still own some I'd drink sooner rather than later....much sooner.
