The 2019 Markham merlot has a pleasant, soft nose that fills the room as soon as the cork is removed. The smell is reminiscent of a sweet blackberry vanilla jam but also has notes of sour cherry and mocha.
Unfortunately, as inviting as the aroma is, the taste is somewhat disappointing. It is not bad, but is not what the nose promised. There is a harsh tartness to the wine that drowns out hints of blackberry, cherry, chocolate, licorice, and espresso. The finish is long, which would be a good thing apart from the sourness. The tannins are slightly overpowering.
There is plenty of complexity to the wine, so I don't want to count it out yet. I suspect the harshness will decrease with age.

The Markham has a quiet nose that features cherry, strawberry, rose petal, red plum, and red currant. A very polished mouthfeel makes for a full body with thick, soft tannin and modest acid; it's a drink-now structure. Flavors include cherry juice, Chinese plum sauce, salmon berry, moist earth, and black pepper. This is one to drink over the next few years, and a little different from others in this tasting profile-wise.

Opens to black cherries, red plums, pastry dough, and fresh herbs. Displays good structure, balance, and weight, and it's still showing firm but that works itself out with air.
