  • Barolo 2004 with the Jeroboam Club (Little Shop and Pantry, Bristol): Bright ruby-red. Attractive fruit showing nice secondary development. Cherry JuicyFruits gum, balsam, spice and menthol. Later, more truffled. Pure and enticing. Poised and elegant on the palate, fresh, mouth filling though no more than medium bodied. A lovely pure lean-modern Monforte Barolo, one of the I've had from Grasso.

  • 18c: no decant: brilliant, coppered ruby: plush nose of pinks, leather, tobacco, sage: bright attack, piercing tannins and luscious fruit balanced with a long finish: schist, bright red fruit, candy apple, red licorice: 18.

  • This felt a bit tired and advanced. Could be a storage issue prior to my purchase, or could be the fact that I stood it up for quite a long time prior to consumption, having planned it for a dinner last year and never laid it back down. Even so, the cork appeared to be securely in the bottle. Seemed to freshen a bit overnight but never really hit its stride.

  • School book Barolo, showing dark fruit intermixed with roses and herbs. In a nice drinking window. Should keep for 5–10 years. 94+

  • Last arrival coming with T to our wine tasteoff and Mediterranean snacks and dinner. On the nose and palate, moderate notes of mixed red and black berries and currants, plums, orange peel, rose petals, mixed spice, rust, a bit of sherry on the nose, menthol, oak and a note well identified by another writer of resin. Light to medium rust darkening with air, full bodied, medium to thick legs. Light to moderate acidity and tannins, both totally integrated, no heat. VG complexity, good+ intensity and persistence. This was a PnP, and while it deepened a bit with air, it was good to go for my taste off the open. A_M’s one sentence prior TN captures this wine well: it’s delicious, somewhat rustic and nearing the end of or a bit past its ideal drinking window, not unlike the ‘09 Scavino I recently reviewed. Still, Barolos are almost always great food wines, and this was terrific with the diverse Turkish fare, while also easy to enjoy on its own. Paul thought the wine was oxidizing, which could explain the sherry notes particularly on the nose. I’m more reluctant, not having this cuvée before, but it did have a bit more sweetness than usual for a Barolo, along with the customary lovely savoriness, to opine, but there’s not a ton of delineation here, so that, even if it’s not oxidizing, drinking sooner than later still seems a good idea. I really enjoyed this, though, and am always appreciative of A_M’s choice of interesting ahd high quality pours. 93
